So, Um…Yeah.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but this caught my eye.

From Wired.com, the Absurd Creature of the Week:  a leech that – get this! – survives by sucking the blood from a hippopotamus’ ass.

Seems like that’s a metaphor for something.

Damned if I know what, though.

Maybe the Horde should have a say.

[Editor’s Note:  I would not expect the Absurd Creature of the Week (ACOTW) to become a featured thing around here.  This particular example, while more than sufficiently strange, seems like a better fit elsewhere.  Just sayin’.  – PK]

  1. What they do is when they mate, one leech will stab the other with a spermatophore, which is a harpoon full of sperm, something called traumatic insemination...

OH yes, there's a metaphor in here somewhere...

  2. “Let’s just say they’re very aerodynamic with respect to explosive hippo poo,” Siddall says. “I can’t imagine that explosive pooing has much to do with getting rid of leeches, especially because I don’t think it would be terribly effective at it anyway.”

    Remarkable. Uncanny, even.

  3. What if the hippos LIKE the leeches in their ass? What if the leeches are like squirmy little gerbils for example? Gerbils lubricated with mayo even. Maybe the hippos are enjoying a little buggering....I mean the little buggers.
